Majority of botnets created using two worms!
« on: April 10, 2007, 10:47:36 PM »
Hi malware fighters,

The majority of botnets in the world are being created using Sdbot and  Gaobot worms. These two worm families were responsible for 80% of all infected bots during the first quarter of the year 2007. Oscarbot, IRCbot and RXbot are responsible for the rest of bot infestations. Traditionally bots were herded through IRC mainly, but a growing number of botnet herders use HTTP now.

"Herding through IRC is good for controlling solitairy computers. But it is not ideal where botnets are concerned. Via HTTP botnet-herders can herd far greater numbers of bots at a time, or check whether these are online or if commands are executed correctly" according to Luis Corron of Panda AV Software.
