Standard Shield:   C:\xml_topic[1].js            -                        1972                             0

I have checked the box for "Show detailed information on performed actions" but I don't see any more info. I don't have any other programs than explorer running right now. It is still running, going on 23 hours now.
Well... I thought you're talking about the on-demand scanner.
Standard Shield is the on-access, resident, scanner, it will be ON all the time, it's normal, it's good, it's necessary.
It's there as a permanent protection to your computer. Even you're not running programs, Windows is accessing files, running services in background... it's normal.

Avast! On-Access Scanner Message - didn't use to get them.
It seems that you've changed the avast settings without knowing what you were doing...
This is an option disabled by default. You can turn it off going to the Standard Shield provider settings, Advanced tab an unchecking 'Show detailed information on action performed'. You can do this for the other providers too.

@ roatan4us
That is the 'Show detailed info on performed actions' at work.

Yes they are fast you don't have to write it down, but it will give you an idea of what is going on, if as you say you are doing nothing this will show what is going on in the background. Try to focus on what folders are being scanned that may give an indication of what program is at work and generating the activity.

The information isn't retrievable as it isn't stored, it is just designed to give you an idea of what is going on.

I can now see that the on-Access scanner message only comes on when I do something. Each time I go to a new site, open a program etc. I can see that the files in that windows have to do with the action I am doing. Since it covers 1/3 to 1/2 page sometimes, I will turn it off again. It does not come on when the computer is idle.

The run time shows under all categories of shields. So it is supposed to run indefenitely?

So since the program run a quick scan every time I do something, does it not do a big scan once in a while? I usually have previous programs set to scan once a week.

I really appreciate all you guys help. This virus program is different than all other I have used. Looks different, works different.

You can change the letter size, the number of the messages, the transparency of them... etc.
Click 'Settings' in my signature and browse for the proper avast4.ini file section.

Sure... this is an antivirus, it must be running all the time. Don't worry, it just uses resources when needed.

So since the program run a quick scan every time I do something, does it not do a big scan once in a while? I usually have previous programs set to scan once a week.
The words aren't quick or big here... on-access (resident) scanning is continuous, on-demand runs when you ask it to do so. You can run an on-demand once a month and it will be good 8)

There was a purpose for his checking the box as mentioned in an earlier post to find out what was being scanned, unfortunately he didn't realise that the pop-us were the show detailed info at work.

For every action, there is usually a reaction.  ;D
