Pop up pain
« on: June 02, 2021, 12:19:56 AM »
I've got a recurring pop up with the heading musicandsunshine.com.
Looks like adware and virus warning.
Avast scans don't kill it.
Boot time, smart, and full virus scans don't even detect it.
Any help?

I have Avast Premium.
This is a pop up that shows up when I open my Chrome browser.
I have scanned repeatedly for several days now.
Still there.
I know enough not to click on it.
I have also run Malwarebytes and Adwcleaner.
Also no dice.

Have you added or updated any browser extensions recently ?

Try running chrome with extensions disabled and see if it still occurs, this would sort of confirm it is a bad extension.

None of those things.
I reset all Chrome settings to default and killed it.
Sort of nuclear, but a small price to pay for piece of mind.
I do a lot of music so it must have come in on a download.
I'm surprised Avast couldn't even detect it.

Extensions on their own aren't viruses, etc. what is a potential problem is when they try to connect to malicious sites and Avast has essentially prevented that.

As you say, you also scanned with other tools Malwarebytes and Adwcleaner and they also found nothing.

I guess since the other tools I used were free to download and use, my expectations of success are not that high.
I pay good money for Avast protection and have for several years, so my expectations are higher.
I had an adware hit similar about a year ago.
The results were negative with all the same tools.
In that case I was able to go in and turn it off.
For the life of me I can't remember how I did it.
I'm old and memory fails me sometimes.
Thanks for your help.
