Update Problems...Serious.. Please Help
« on: April 29, 2007, 07:39:21 AM »
I am running Win XP Home... Service Pak 2
Windows Firewall....
1.81 Ghz 750 Meg Ram

I have been having problems updating Avast for a few days... I saw that 4.7.986 would fix this issue. SO I downloaded it and installed it.  All seemed to go well as I rebooted. When I came back.. my browsers no longer work. I can only get them to run if I shut off Avast.

So I tried control panel in order to repair.... When I clicked the button nothing happens!  Well now I am fretting... I tired to downgrade back to the last known working avast from 1-07. When I double click the icon.. Nothing happens!  I can't uninstall.. I can do nothing with Avast... Please help...

I would suggest that a complete uninstall/reinstall.

1. download the avast uninstall untility from here  http://avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html
save it to your desktop, easy to find there
2. download, if you don't have a copy, of the latest program
3. uninstall via add/remove programs
4. reboot
5. run the uninstall utility
6. reboot
7. install the new version

This way you are starting fresh.

Thank you all so much for your help...

Right now the situation is....

Avast did an install... I put the reg files in....

I added Avast to my Windows Firewall allowances...

But my Opera browser... and My IE Browser will not work at all... They hang and do not go to the web. In fact, I can't even access my satellite modem with them which is usually instantaneous. Again, I appreciate all the help and I really need to get this fixed. By the way, when I turn off the web sheild and mail sheild my Opera works... But I don't want to leave them off...

Thanks Again..

Are ashMaiSv.exe and ashWebSv.exe allowed to connect the Internet?
They're the services for mail and web of avast, the providers.
Do you use any other firewall besides Windows one?
Any proxy application, any security application that could intefere?

Yes.. Both are allowed in my Windows Firewall.. No there are no other firewalls.  Also I have noticed that I can still not connect to the updates with the fresh install.. THis all began Friday when I did an update to 4.7.986...

There are no proxies set up.. and no other security programs that have changed since I put avast on my system originally 2 years ago...

David, do you mind ...

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again.
6. Boot.

Thanks again for your reply Tech.. I am sorry to be so hard.  I have done the uninstall from CP and then the tool 2 times now.. I also have uninstalled any programs I have put on in the past week and cleaned my registry. At this moment I am on a fresh install.. with nothing else that could collide. Windows security is properly set... (firewall, etc). The problem as I can see it is that somehow.. when I did the update, my IE Browser got corrupted somehow... as only one of my IE based browsers (slimbrowser) will work. IE MYIE will not work at all. And by the way.. it works with Avast running.

But my Opera does not work with the Avast running.. I still need to disable it to get here or check mail. And since I do almost all of my browsing with Opera as well as mail it is disheartening to say the least.

In short.. I have done what you asked cheif.. what's next on the list?  LOL ..

Thanks Again..

Please, post the last 100-200 files of avast log files:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log

Tech....

I did one last total uninstall.... cleaned my registry.....
Installed 1-07 dated version 4.7.942 and everything is working fine again.. INCLUDING my browsers...

I have shut off auto update for the time being.... and will manually update the vps...  Thanks again for all of your help... But working on this all day and having things working finally .. I dont have the time to reinstall the problem edition and do the log save :(  I am sorry...

Will the older program keep me protected until the bugs can be worked out?  I sure hope so cause I love the program?

Thanks once more for ALL of your help friend!

Why don't you set it for automatic?

Will the older program keep me protected until the bugs can be worked out?
If you have the latest VPS, you can wait a little to get the last program version, specially if you're using XP. Latests versions are being released to solve, in most cases, Vista compatibilities and features.
