Why would auto updating slow down anything? Just keep it set to auto update. Updating weekly in days like now is the same like not having antivirus at all...

Automatic updates do NOT slow down your PC. The avast update service (the updating scheduler) uses little memory and avast.setup (the updater itself) only runs while updating. Believe me, I'm the guy who says WebShield can slow down your web browsing.
