Increasing Page Faults for ashSimpl.exe
« on: April 22, 2007, 06:02:52 PM »
My computer is also lagging...I read the Posting for Major Lagging?

But looking at task manager (see attachment) the Simple User Interface has an issue, right?  I was doing a scan at the time. I have since stopped the scan it was performing and now the Mem Usage is down below 9000K and the Page Faults stopped at 2,537,845.

What caused this to begin with?
How do I run a system scan without this problem in the future?

There's nothing wrong about the Page Fault values, i.e. I don't see any problem here.

What's the meaning of Page Faults? I mean, technically, what is it?

This can explain it better, Wiki, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Page_fault or a google search http://www.google.com/search?q=what+are+page+faults.
Thanks David... I'm lazy 8)

Igor, does this explain?

Contrary to what its name might suggest, a page fault is not necessarily a fatal error. In any operating system that utilises virtual memory to increase the amount of memory available to programs, page faults are a common and necessary occurrence.

For optimization reasons, avast uses paging I/O to read all files for scanning. This turns out to be slightly faster than regular reads.

That's why the Page Faults value is so high... ;)
