PC freezes: Avast conflicts w. other antivirus software
« on: February 18, 2004, 06:01:04 PM »
I have just spent two hours trying to get my computer back to life after an accident with Avast. It is indeed an honourable goal to make free anti-virus software for home-users, but wouldn´t it be a good idea to warn about conflicts with other software on your homepage, so people can uninstall other programs before download?

I downloaded your software and my laptop just frooze after I restarted it (XP and newest avast home edition). It started up alright but when I came to the desktop I could only move the mouse-cursor around, - no contact to any programs and I couldn't even use ctrl-alt-del. After having searched through this forum I found out that I am not the only one who has experienced this so the help was easily available:

Restart your computer from the on/off button and press F8 until you reach the safemode screen. Here you select safemode and start up your computer. You can the uninstall avast and restart your computer again. This at least worked for me.

This experience has convinced me that paying for Norton might not be such a bad idea after all! I hope you put up some more warning signs on your homepage so others will not have to go through the same waste of time due to conflicting software.

With best regards,

Jeppe

sorensenjeppe,

1. avast features quite a thorough check for competitive AV software, and warns the user accordingly. It didnt' obviously work in your case, though -- what version of Norton are you using, exactly? Is there a file called navrt.sys or savrt.sys somewhere on your system disk?

2. did you consider removing NAV instead of avast?

Anyway, this is not only a problem with avast. Virtually any two AV programs don't work together... (and epecially with Norton AV)

Thanks
Vlk

The same thing happened to me.  ;D
I installed Avast Av with other antivirus, but avast warned me that there is other antivirus on the PC and Avast wouldn't start to avoid the system crash.
This is one of the things I like about Avast

Vlk is fully correct (as usual). But I can't imagine that avast! did not warn you about the presence of NAV...  :(
Vlk, maybe the changes in the last versions to disable my 'second' warning of the SystemWorks presence did this  :-\

Sorensenjeppe, do not install more than one antivirus program (resident). Norton never gets out of the registry... unless a lot of work can be done... But be happy, I´m here because I get rid from Norton, after Vlk and Kubecj precious help, lot of lost hours... The main reason installation fails or systems freeze when using new AV programs is the inablility of the old ones to uninstall properly. I have had to dig up removal tools for Norton before anything would operate properly. This is not an avast issue, Kaspersky, McAfee and even Grisoft (e-mail plugin) have their own unique uninstall issues as well.

No doubt, avast! is quite better than NAV (of course, when properly installed)  ;)

It turned out that NAV 2003 is not being detected by avast correctly (NAV 2002 and 2004 was).

We've fixed this already - it will be corrected in the next program update (most likely next week).

Thanks
