Possible SSL Secured Problem
« on: May 12, 2007, 04:40:32 PM »
Hello,

I'm subscribed to website called www.jacquielawson.com.  I've had no trouble using this site until recently when I was notified of a new version of Avast Home edition.  I performed the Avast update.  The next time I accessed the "lawson" website, here's what happened.

The Home page was displayed successfully. The SSL Secured padlock icon was not displayed (this is normal)
I entered my userid and password and clicked on the Log In button.
The SSL Secured (128 bit) now displays and system freezes - ie: cursor turns to hourglass and remains indefinitely.  I was able to close the program by clicking on it on the taskbar.

I wonder if the Avast update had anything to do with this problem or is it just a coincidence.

Ant thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Clark

Well the link you provided is for a normal http non-ssl page which avast does monitor. I assume that you logon and the user name and password are validated (on a secure https page ?) and then you are redirected to another page (http or https ?).

avast doesn't/can't monitor https (secure SSL) pages as they are encrypted, the whole purpose to keep out prying eyes.

What is your firewall ?
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

The Home page is http.  After login, the next page is https.

The Firewall is Comodo.

I forgot to mention this - this has been tried on two computers.  The machine running under Win XP using only the XP's firewall; works fine.

The other  is running under Windows 2000 with Comodo firewall.  This is the one with the problem.

avast shouldn't have any impact as it doesn't scan https pages but going from an http page to https page some parameters are carried forward namely the user name and password. Some firewalls have privacy settings (Zone Alarm Pro for one) that seem to conflict with the web shield proxy when it is in the http page, blocking the parameters being passed between unsecure and secure pages.

Unfortunately I have never used Comodo, so hopefully another forum member may be able to help.

In theory both systems with avast should work in the same way as they are able to use the transparent settings (win2k, winNT and winXP). So there would appear to be something else in the mix.

What is your browser are the security settings the same and do you allow cookies, etc. ?
