The Mail Shield issue seems to be fixed in Version 21.5.2470- Build 21.5.6354.675. It works for me.

The new build number isn't shown after triggering a manual update. Try a reboot, then it should be deployed.

The Avast 21.5 free offline installer seems unchanged from the one I downloaded before the mail certificates issue was realised so I have to ask if that bug will still be installed if I run it.  I routinely archive each offline installer.  Perhaps I will give the one for Avast 21.5 a miss this month.

I would suspect that when using the installer it would also check for emergency/other updates.

Whilst saving a copy of the off-line installation file is wise I still saved the 21.5 off-line installation file), but you shouldn't need to run that every time there is a program update available (I didn't).  So in this instance using the on-line installation file would appear to be the way to go if having done a manual program update, the build number isn't the latest.

@loungehake, you should be ok, no need to wait til next month. I just (30 mins ago) downloaded the offline free installer and got the 675 version straight out of the box, so to speak. Only the normal restart, no repair/restart required.   :)

Mail issues are solved but Avast 21.5 seems distinctly sluggish compared with 21.4.  Is this just my mistaken impression?

Can't confirm, 21.5 is running smooth here.

Performance is a very subjective thing.  This episode has been a learning exeprience for me and so a very helpful one.  Thanks to all who contributed and shared their knowledge which I have found  most beneficial.

Why is avast blocking a game client program that has been running on my computer every day for the past 10 years, most of which I've had Avast as my AV?!?

Ever since the new build I am now getting behaviour and ransomeware shields failed to load and sometimes the password shield.
Program version :- 21.5.2470 (build 21.5.6354.679) Avast Premlum
Virus Definition version :- 210701-4

Have uninstalled using the avast tool and reinstalled ofline version then updated.
Doing a search seem this issue has been around for a while even with the correct version.

The update to V. 21.5 has re-introduced the Mail Shield bug which prevents the Windows Mail App syncing email accounts. Tested on two devices so far and both required disabling Mail Shield to restore functionality to the mail app.

Not good enough, avast.

Edit: Issue now also confirmed as present on two more devices, turning mail shield off resolves it.

Edit2: 18/06/21 - Updated to build 21.5.6354.675 and issue with Mail Shield is now resolved.

I am supporting a customer who insists on using Avast Free Edition and it blocks all incoming mail using Windows 10 Mail (blue envelope).  No emails received since 12th June!  The error code in the app was 0x80072f0d.  This relates to a certificate error and the account which it fails on is a plusnet.com email address.  The error code resolution was to turn off the Avast Mail shield.  My customer has Outlook 2019 installed and that is not blocked by Avast Free edition - but I cannot persuade her to use this superior email program!  If you could resolve this I would be grateful.  If I had my way I would move her onto Outlook but she won't budge.  I will remote into her machine tomorrow to check the Avast versions and update to the above one to see if this resolves it or if she is on the same version.  Thank you for your help

After some update a couple of weeks ago the Mail Shield has started to tag and quarantine an automated mail from one of my business partners as Virus, even thou it is not, and it was never tagged like this before the update.

It uses the - HTML:Url-inf [Susp] as the reason for this action.

The mail content is moved to Quarantine, but when I try to Restore it I only get the “Whoops, error occurred.” message.

The mail is clearly available in the quarantine vault, since I can restore it to a file and manually take it from html to eml and open it again in Thunderbird just fine.

I tried adding the senders domain to the Exceptions, but that had zero effect, since the mails are still tagged and quarantined.

So, WTF is happening with the Mail Shield on this new update?
