I have one Windows 2000 workstation on which the mail scanner service is hanging.
Outbound messages are being held in the Outlook Express outbox instead of being sent.
The mail scanner service cannot be shutdown either through the Avast control panel. The control panel goes through the motions and then shows the service still running.
It also cannot be shut down directly as a Windows service. After some time the service control panel reports that the service does not respond. Rebooting is necessary to restore the mail scanner service.
According to the setup log, there was an automatic software update from version 986 to version 1001 on 7-may. The first known hangup occurred on 11-may and the second on 14-may.
The most recent mail server log is enclosed.
