Can't help, but I do remember seeing the same problem just recently:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=28268.0

I wondered what the Babelfish translation meant ('the register system had to be restored by means of a newspaper').

Obviously journal means log as well as newspaper in French.

Maybe some of the comments in that thread will help.

Mina, I suggest you backup your Registry... if the recover becomes impossible, you could not be able to boot anymore...
Any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially 'Errors'?

It's possible that you may find a solution contained within these pages...

http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/windows-xp/7450-xp-possible-registry-problem-change-settings.html
and
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1048048020

I see a good handful of remedies that have been suggested, everything from file corruption to sfc /scannow to system restore to disabling Network DDE, and more.

My guess would be that the problem might be solved by disabling the Network DDE.

Good Luck

Another culprit might be bad RAM.

You could go here --> http://www.memtest.org/
and download Memtest86+ V1.70

And in case you haven't already, running a good registry cleaner wouldn't hurt.

A couple other thoughts.

You could try XP's Help and Support (Startup and Shutdown Troubleshooter).

You could also try start the computer using the last known good configuration.

Okay.  I'm out.

Hope something works.

Mina, I was thinking and another suggestion is, after backing up your registry (http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/) you could run chkdsk /R in the Restoration Console environment.

Mina, is the original problem still there? Or your computer is ok now?

Mina, I've received the following IM:

Wish we knew what Minacross did to repair the error message.  It would give us all help to learn what worked.

Can you say what did you do?
Thanks.

1. Did you scandisk (chkdsk) your disks?
2. Is your HDD defragmented?
3. How much free space you have in your partitions?
4. Is there any program hanging on shutdown?
