EDIT: Maybe this needs it's own thread...
Why, there aren't any restrictions about posting replies in here.  :)

It isn't that, just that probably deserves it's own thread...

I would log that under not-interesting, personally I will have nothing to do with Cnet and that unfortunately would include this forum.

No way will I contribute to the Cnet forum as the best experts are here already!

Now there's something wrong with CNET? I'd like to know what it is since I've always found it useful and have a registered account there. I don't see anything wrong with the forum there either. If it exposes more people to the product, that's a plus in my opinion.

You clearly haven't heard about their new practice of wrapping downloads in their download manager. Supposedly to make downloads easier, whilst at the same time bundling crapware with it, e.g. toolbars, etc.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

So? You just uninstall the manager afterwards. I don't see the problem.

I just went there and downloaded both Avast and Winrar. When I double clicked on both of them they went directly to the application's own installer and there never was any mention of any download managers or toolbars. Nothing got installed on my system either.

You don't have the option, the manager controls the download of the program you actually want and at the same time bundles the crapware. This is all over the various blogs, etc. about this practice.

Not all programs are included in this, but it is the thin end of the wedge.

If I want to download something, I only want to download that, not what they think I might want and I don't want to have to clean house after a download to get rid of the crap. So for me Cnet is history.

I posted in one of the threads at CNET saying that Avast was lighter on resources than MSE but I also added that if people want the full information and help for Avast, they'd be better off coming here. That part got deleted by a moderator.

Recommending another forum is against their rules. :)

It's a lot easier to use another server that doesn't add any crap in the first place.  ;D

I notice that if you're logged in (provided you've signed up) you never see the toolbar or download manager.

Yes I noticed that there was distinct lack of any mention of the 'official avast forum' in the Avast Resources section on the left column.

Almost like being treated as the poor cousin, are they are ashamed of us :P
Or more likely don't want to be compared with the support given here.

@ Bob
I can't see there being a problem referring to the official avast support forum from what is meant to be the avast sub forum of Cnet. This to me just puts another nail in the coffin as this was one of the very things that I mentioned, avast not being in control of what is meant to be its forum.

In honesty, I think it would dilute the support given on the official forums. Not only that here we have some control over what is posted and I don't believe that control would be present in a third party forum. I also see this additional visibility as a double edged sword, if it is poorly supported (people just don't have time to devote to multiple forums), people will get a bad impression. So there is a risk if it isn't well supported and the official avast forums by comparison to many other forums are lightning fast and I wouldn't like to see that diluted.

Didn't take that chicken long to come home to roost ;D

David,
I agree with you to get from there to this forum, you need to go through
quite a few clicks and, if you know what your looking for, you might even find
this forum.  :(

PRIZES to Thank you for your support

Happy Birthday Scotty!

On November 19th, 1997 the first release of WinPatrol was made public and generated 1252 downloads. This year is the 14th anniversary of WinPatrol and we'd like to celebrate it with a bang and plenty of prizes.

Scotty (WinPatrol) and I go back a long way. His birthday is 2 days before mine.  ;D
Granted, I'm a few years old and might even have a louder bark.
I can't remember ever having and IBM compatible PC that didn't have WinPatrol installed and,
Scotty on guard.

When I'm not out on the road visiting Computer Clubs and doing the presentation,
I'm busy working on the Meadow Lake Parks Project.

We are now busy forming the Ponds and doing other grading work. It's slow and tedious but something that has to be done. :)
