Well Herons are land based birds, but they need a water source and availability of food, the pond has hundreds of goldfish in it. Someone must have thrown out their goldfish and they have thrived. Watching the Herons fishing is an amazing sight, they are pretty accurate with that long neck and beak. It normally patrols the edge and on occasion wades in the water with their long legs. I have seen them on occasion actually swimming and they look strange.
Their is a resident pair of Moorhens and their first brood is on the go with 5 chicks seen so far. In the last couple of years there have also been Mallards, at the moment there are around 5 males 'Drakes' and one female, 'Hen' with lots of fights. Last year there were 11 ducklings in each of two broods, so I go through lots of bread (only wholemeal), mealworms and general bird food.
