Not sure whether Bluescreenview has already featured on the thread -

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,80367/description.html?tk=rss_downloads_weekly_null

I have not download as yet. Nor can I provide the ideal download site.
But looks promising.

Likewise. But the utility is there ready on my flash drive for when the time comes. I havent read the documentation yet but just a thought - I guess Im going to need to load in Safe Mode or on command line after the event, or perhaps load prior whenever I think there is a possibility of a BSOD. I have some old mainboards around which I could maybe use to generate one - but the time involved. I think a code 10 is what I need - faulty hardware - maybe an old cd player on later model PC would do the trick. Im sure somehow or another I will get the chance to test the utility.

Edit - create a dump file of course. Where was I? probably got my code wrong as well. I dont know a lot about minidump so I guess I need to put some time aside.

It only reads minidumps, not the kernel (full) dumps... it's a pity.
Sometimes only the full dump is useful, but this application does not read it.
I wish there is a "simple" application that could analyze the memory dump.
Nowadays, you need to be a technician to analyze it...

Thanks for input Tech. Memory dump is topic area new to me something new to learn.
This utility might provide a start point for me when I find time.

Meanwhile those still using Windows XP might find this explanation of error codes interesting -

Generally I will look to Windows first for resolution of problem areas because more often than not I find that is where the problem lies.

It's too old for me... 1995... Wouldn't the error messages changed since then?

Unsure 1995  ??? Error messages more for hardware, and on older stuff at that - like you say Tech.

I just clean installed XP Pro to a CUSI M (bout 2000 vintage I think), 733Mhz cpu, 512 sd ram, 20GB HDD, but with 2008 DVD/R - IE8, Chrome, SP3, and so on. This machine is an antique but still runs a storm. Owner seems happy enough.  :)

Still - no error messages or bluescreens, so dont know if those utilities will see much if any use

According to it's web page, EMW was last updated May 22nd, 2005. Still, this is quite old and I have found that some error numbers are not in EMW. I wish the author would update EMW because it use to be very useful.

Perhaps the whole Windows errors thing could now be approached from a broader perspective taking in browser activities and associated changes that have may impacted on desktop usage.

I dont see carting Event ID or some intuitive guess across to Help and Support and then trawling through the leads that are retuirned as a very inspiring way to deal with an error situation. Takes a bit of effort. Always feel not to bother, so often wont go there.
