frustration
« on: February 22, 2004, 06:10:52 PM »
I have colored bars appearing around my cursor.

also I will have similar bar patterns appear on screen at random places and times and stay unless refreshed. (I have always had avast on my win2k pro machine)

Originally I though I wiped out this problem I believe java bytever.a was lingering around although I'm not sure if that is the cause of this.

I have run every darn online scanner (panda,rav,trend micro, norton online and my own windows 2003 pro ver, etc.) and nothing appears wrong but this is driving me nuts!!

Also upon reboot if I boot into win98 it is ten times worse!!

At the boot menu sometimes I have color patterns deeper colrs than windows but color patern on 1/4 othe screen horizontilly.

This is driving me crazy although right now its a short drive!

Jay

PS if I knew how to do a capture screen in win2k i'll try to capture it but I only remember prt scr + paste to paint in win98.

What makes you think it's a virus?
Couldn't it be a problem with graphic card drivers, for example?

With a computer it could be anything...

and admittedly this could be a coincidence... but when I started having the problem an avast scan did find and quarantine a few files (although I never really looked at them ) and then running the free online scanners I got a few of the java bytever.a things??

thanks

This is a graphics problem for sure. Check cooling on your graphic card,downclock it if you have overclocked it. I hope you didn't mess with VGA BIOS...

graphic card overclocked...?? I don't think so.
VGA BIOS ...?? no "I" didn't;... I don't think?....why? the way you ask about VGA BIOS (for future use; What would be the problem with messing w/VGA BIOS? that can't be undone?

I do leave my computer on so I will shut done (as soon as I'm done preparing todays batch of taxes) for a bit.

In the mean time THANKS for the help!!!!

I still have NOT found a solution to this problem!!! ??? ??? ???

I have reimaged the nfts partition. I have swapped out graphics cards. I have tried different monitors. I have flashed my BIOS. aaarrrrgghh!

It happens at my boot menu ALSO although the colors are more distict ans solid on the screen as opposed to my description below.

When it happens on W2k Pro it is more like blurred pink/purple'ish lines.

like this:

||||||||||             ||||||||||           ||||||||||            ||||||||||
             ||||||||||            ||||||||||           ||||||||||
||||||||||             ||||||||||           ||||||||||            ||||||||||
             ||||||||||            ||||||||||           ||||||||||
||||||||||             ||||||||||           ||||||||||            ||||||||||
             ||||||||||            ||||||||||           ||||||||||
||||||||||             ||||||||||           ||||||||||            ||||||||||
             ||||||||||            ||||||||||           ||||||||||
||||||||||             ||||||||||           ||||||||||            ||||||||||
             ||||||||||            ||||||||||           ||||||||||
||||||||||             ||||||||||           ||||||||||            ||||||||||
             ||||||||||            ||||||||||           ||||||||||

Each section of colored bars appears radomly until the screen is filled in. not completely but as shown above in alternating sections.

If anybody could point me in the right direction that would be great.

WIN2k Pro
Radeon 7500
MSI KT6 Delta mobo

Thanks
J

You get such pattern only when graphics engine (GPU) pipelines are damaged or when graphic card is overclocked too high (or cooling system isn't working correctly).

Check the cooling,otherwise contact ATI support.
If you get this at boot-time too than its definitly a hardware problem.

How would I check video overclock I don't think I have ever changed any options for that?!?

If I put another card in at it's doing the SAME thing should I assume hardware problem means mobo problem? If so is this repairable or is it time to bury the mobo?

Thanks so much for this reply AND your earlier one!!!
