only AVAST Pros can solve this !!
« on: June 11, 2007, 10:34:23 AM »

Hi all,

I messed up with my ntfs HDD:[slave] and when trying to access the only single folder up there it returns: "access is denied" ..

BUT when [right click] on that folder to quick scan it with AVAST then: OMG, all files are still there ..

So: what is the "engine" that avast used to access and scan all files in that inaccessibly folder?

OR in better meaning: What is the folder explorer [other than BG's stupid MS.Explorer] that can give me full access to the folder which use an engine technology like our beloved AVAST! .. ?

thnx in advance for ur kind answers and also thnx to all the readers: .:Bye4now:.

Maybe this will help:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881

BoB: my Pro, WoW ..That link really helped me very well and the problem was solved.

meanwhile "before your reply": I used "Active File Recovery" and recovered most of the files and folders and wanted to format the HDD until your reply BoB'ed-up to me "wow again: what a joyful BoBing" So then I halt the "destruction" formating of a healthy HDD.

Anyway! It's good to know in cases like that many solutions to solve a problem, yours with A+ grade and the Active File Recovery solution with grade B. and grade d/f  for dESTRUCTIVE fORMATING ;)

Thank you and Thanks to Avast! too, and to all the passing-by readers.

Regarding the original question: if you have enough privileges (which is mostly equivalent to "if you are logged on as Administrator"), avast! uses a special way to bypass user restrictions, so yes, it might see files you normally don't see.

Note: there is no security problem here, avast! doesn't do anything you couldn't do yourself, even though some effort might be needed. The fact that you are an Administrator means that you have rights for (almost) everything. However, the access rights in Windows are slightly confusing... while you (as an Administrator) may not have rights to access a file, for example, you have rights to grant those rights to yourself ;)
