Hello all,

I received this evening the following lines message in my Avast4 journal
(in the "Avertissement" menu). I put them in the attachement file.

(I looked for this name in the search box, it suggested the same,
but with the exec suffix).

Is this harmfull ?

What's I find curious is that I have'nt called  the cdn.drivecleaner.com site myself.
It just came by itself.

drive cleaner is one of the many applacation which installs it self on ur comp with out ur apporval..it may be included in some other application which u installed... or it can install it self using ur ActiveX controls..just by visting a webpage u can get infected...

Let's see if a HijackThis log sheds as much light as in the other thread:

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe

• Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
• Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
• Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  
• Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  
• Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
• At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  
• Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
• Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
• DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hello,

Attached here is the Hijackthis.log file.

Comparing it to a recent version of it, I notice the
following :

- can find any notepad reference entry
- the original Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe looks like "MOZILL~1\FIREFOX.EXE

There may be other. Is it because these are currently used the names are changed ?

When the offending ccleaner pop-up window came up, I answered "no", and then I
received an Avast alarm window, telling me what to do with the xm92usrm.exe file.
I put it into the Avast chest. The Avast alarm went twice, but only 1 file was saved
into the chest. Was that the correct behaviour ?

Comparing it to a recent version of it, I notice the
following :

- can find any notepad reference entry
- the original Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe looks like "MOZILL~1\FIREFOX.EXE

I don't see any indication that drivecleaner was able to install nor any evidence of a downloader, so things look OK.

Notepad would only show up in the running processes if it was open when HJT was run, so its absence from the current log is nothing to worry about.

And Mozilla vs Mozill~1 happens when the full path is too long to display in the open window.  Maybe the first time you saw it the log was full screen and this time you had a smaller window.

OK, many thanks for the answers. Happy to hear you saying nothing suspicious on
the Hijackthislog file (still not yet able to analyze it in some way). In the meantime,
I  have done a boot time full scan, and nothing was detected. I have also run the
SUPERAntispyware (fully) updated product, and it eliminated  some, it said, "harmfull"
offending cookies, but still no detection. I have also eliminated all the temp files
(using the real CCleaner product !). All seems to be OK for me now.

So Avast looks to have well detected this suspicious file and put it correctly
into the chest upon my request. :-))

Is the xm92usrm.exe file really consided as a virus by Avast ? Upon which criteria did
Avast decide to flag this file ? Has Avast a black list of well known suspicious Web sites ?

This file came downloaded most probably when I was visiting some advertising Web
site. (a hidden script was possibly activated throught a Web address). Here is way
to be protected against this kind of threat (some anti-activeX feature I have heard of,
but I do not know about) ?

Here is a way to track back and identify this site ?

This is probably overly simplistic but avast! detections are signature based, so fragments of known malware are compared to the file contents and, if a match is made, you are alerted.

I don't think there's any way to track the source of the infection.  Unless you visit the same site often and the infection recurs its difficult to impossible to know exactly where this happened.

Oh, and you're welcome.  But I really didn't do anything except look at your log.
