Event Errors in Vista 32bit

I was checking through my event logs tonight and have discovered a large number of error messages generated by avast. Most messages appear similar to the following message:

AAVM - scanning error: x_AavmCheckFileDirectEx: avfilesScanReal of C:\$RECYCLE.BIN\S-1-5-21-3146588717-2574154041-1610101330-500\$ROI4ALC.2-Win32 failed, 00000005.

These seem to be, possibly, permissions related. However, I'm running in Super Admin Mode.

Anyone have any clues as to what may be causing these errors?

Well the 00000005 is access denied as you mention is likely to be permissions related.

What is the significance of the $ in the path C:\$RECYCLE.BIN, is this something like the norton recycle bin, protected ?
If so that is the likely outcome.

DavidR, Thanks for the rapid reply and for confirming my suspicions. As for the meaning of the $ in the path, I can only assume that it indicates a Protected System folder??

Anyone able to clarify this?

No problem, fast isn't unusual on the avast forums.

I assume then you don't have norton protected recycle bin or any similar application ?

Looking at your original post it may have been something in the recycle bin that was what avast couldn't gain access '$ROI4ALC.2-Win32 failed, 00000005.' I would say ensure your recycle bin is emptied and just monitor it and see if there is any recurrence of it.

Personally I don't pay that much attention to the windows event viewer, especially related to avast as for the most part if it is a serious problem avast will usually pop-up an error message. Also what gets into the event viewer is related to the level of reporting in the avast Program Settings, Logging, Notice is probably best as a compromise between too much and not enough.
