I am a new user of Avast! (free ver.)  :-[and want to check the dates of the virus definitions. But can't find that. Can anyone point me to it, so I know I'm up to date? TIA

If you launch Avast! antivirus program you can see current version of database.
Besides you can see it via Menu->About...->VPS

Right click on blue avast! ball in system tray, then left click on "About avast!..." to see latest vps on your computer.

Go to http://www.avast.com/eng/updates.html to see latest available.

You can set the virus database to automatic updates and set the update interval (the least available is 120 minutes for Home version). You will always be updated and shouldn't worry about that. Welcome to avast forums.
