As far as I can tell, there are a lot of crappy AV programs on that website, but Comodo is the only one that actually failed.
Comodo is trying a different approach to other free AV providers. Its emphasis is on HIPS rather than its currently "pitiful" malware database. So while it may not perform well in AV Comparatives tests, which is a definite concern, it doesn't necessarily follow that it will be "crappy" at protecting your PC, if you leave the HIPS turned on.

What CAV 2.0 is really "crappy" at, is allowing you to use your PC while it's running. It's terribly slow at on-access scanning and relies on its list of "safe" files in order for you to be able to work any any sort of speed.

FYI Comparison of time taken to run 'OpenOffice.org Writer' from fresh boot. (Celeron 850mhz, 256MB RAM) with various free AV.
Comodo AV 2.0 Beta, 103 seconds
PC Tools AV 3.1, 40 seconds
Spyware Terminator with CLAMAV plugin, 37 seconds
Avast! 4.7 Home, 33 seconds
AVG (Antivirus) 7.5 Free, 27 seconds
AOL Active Virus Shield, 26 seconds
Avira PEC, 25 seconds
NO AV installed, 20 seconds

that's it.  Melih is one of the Comodo staff and it's very interesting what was written.  I'm interested for responses on this

Matt Segstro

He isn't one of the Comodo Staff he owns it I believe.

And what he has put there looks like it comes straight out of a press release or marketing blurb. I go on results and the current results simply don't support the pretty picture painted.

I have no affiliation to avast (Alwil Software) other than I have been a happy user for over three years and no infections. No one single program is going to protect you so a multi-application/layer approach to security is IMHO best, backed up with a degree of common sense.

There are any number of freeware HIPs applications you can add to your defences.

I would appreciate to know of any freeware HIPS programs that you know of other than Spyware Terminator which I don't like very much.  Thanks.

Thanks for those links, I'll look them up and try some of them.  It is true that HIPS is Comodo's main approach to defense of your machine, and if I can combine a good scanner like avast! or AVG or something along with a designated HIPS program, it's probably better than Comodo.  Thanks again.

To be short and simple, stick with avast. Comodo is just a beta that is undergoing tests and contains many bugs and has a very low detection rate.

Spyware Terminator 8)
There are others but maybe not so light on resources and, some of them, to boring with questions and more questions about allowing programs to run...
