nope, I disabled windows firewall and using ZoneAlarm Free. I can try disabling ZoneAlarm again because I have done it once before and it did not work.
Remove all entries of avast from ZA Applications rules and try again.
ZA is notorious on 'messing' entries... If it does not work, try just uninstall ZA to test.

Just a thought... might the hardware firewall on my router be the cause of the problem?
I don't think so. avast does not require particular rules on hardware firewall settings.

Just want to report... It works! I just uninstall ZoneAlarm and the internet works. Hmmm... But I kinda surprised that the internet works when ZoneAlarm is uninstall but when disabled it does not.

Time for me to find a Firewall replacement or just stick with windows one

I'm not to surprised when a firewall is disabled it still has drivers and services that are probably still running. Some put a block on connections if you manually disable them, some have self protection to stop you disabling them. Unfortunately it has been over 4 years since I last used ZA, so I can't say how it functions in this case with the latest version.

Windows one does not have outbound protection.
Why don't you try Comodo? I recommend this free one 8)

Comodo 3 (beta) completely breaks Web Shields http redirection, fortunately, all other providers are still working and manually configured proxy too.

Can you explain further, is it not simply blocking of ashWebSv.exe ?

I have been using them (avast + Comodo 3 (beta) + Vista) and they seems to be working very good.
What do you mean by 'breaks' here?

By breaks, I mean that if Web Shield is running, any program that's using it can't connect, unless I manually set the proxy. And no, ashWebSv.exe is not blocked, but I had to manually create all corresponding rules, as Comodo didn't even notice it's running. I have allowed DNS and loopback in Defense+ and all IP in/out connections in the firewall, but it doesn't work even if I set both firewall and defense+ to Allow all. It looks like some LSP conflict or something, I will try reinstalling avast as soon I have enough time. BTW, I have XP Pro and on Comodo forums there are lots of people with the same problem, it's also in the workarounds thread for current version.

Strange... I haven't do this and WebShield is scanning for sure all my browser activity...

Strange again... Comodo asked me for permission and it's logging all webshield 'connections'.

Hate to sound like a broken record, but I still can't find a solution for this. ZoneAlarm, Comodo, Windows Firewall, even NO firewall... I still can't complete downloads or streaming content without disabling on-access protection. Is there no further information that would help? Logs, diagnostics... anything? Glad to hear that others have gotten around their problems, but mine are mysteriously firewall-unrelated. It's all Avast and I'm out of ideas, save abandoning Avast on this computer... and I'm not willing to resort to that.

I wish I could help. But I'm empty... I can't understand the problem so I can't help further. Hope someone else could...
