Web Shield blocking Skype
« on: July 25, 2007, 01:43:40 AM »
After I make a call with Skype, Skype opens a new tab in my browser asking for feedback.  Starting yesterday Skype hasn't opened a new tab asking for feedback, but a pop up in the lower right-hand corner of my screen says "ashwebshield has blocked ###.###.###.###, port####".  Unable to get through it changes ports a few times.  After a while I get a message in my Skype GUI asking me to please give feedback on my calls.

I can still make calls ok.

Skype shouldn't be blocked.

If web shield blocks it is usually because there is something in the URL Blocking have you got anything in the URL Blocking using wildcards that might be responsible. Changing ports won't have any effect if the IP is still the same and being trapped.

I know nothing about how skype works (unavailable on dial-up) so I can't be of much practical help.

None that I know of, I didn't add anything ever.

This didn't start till yesterday, I guess it is something that started with new avast! definition/detection updates.

But signature files don't block they detect and alert and that isn't a normal infected file/url alert and as far as I aware nothing has changed in the web shield functionality.

Are you running the Beta version of avast ?

Is there anything in the avast log viewer, warning section that gives any more information ?

No, I'm not using avast! beta, I'm using the same as you.

Nothing in warning concerning this.

I appreciate your help, but I think maybe this is something for vlk or another of the alwil team.

Thank you David

I have used Skype on dial up, but I can't run anything else as Skype will need every bit of the dial up connection.

I am using high speed DSL.

Your welcome.
It is most certainly a mystery, I'm not sure if you can add the IP address in the Exceptions, e.g. http://###.###.###.### (I don't know if it accepts IP addresses or not) and see if that works as a temporary work around until someone can give a definitive answer.

I'm getting feedback requests from Skype in my browser now.  I guess a fix came in the detection updates I got a while ago.  Everything is normal now.

I just downloaded the latest VPS about 256KB I think, quite a large one.

In case you're curious, I didn't try your temporary work around.

I wanted to see if alwil would fix this problem.  And obviously they did. :)

I've not seen any issues with Skype which I use for my international calls.

I was about to test, but since the problem seems to have gone away I guess there is not much point in doing so.

Webshield does not use band... it's a local scanning (local proxy) and not remote (through Internet).
Do you use any firewall?
