Screenaver Crashed My PC
« on: September 07, 2007, 09:45:45 AM »
OMG! I don't know what I was thinking. I downloaded this screensaver straight from Microsoft Technet, then open and installed it and it crashed my PC. From what I've seen was a blue screen with a bunch of errors! I rebooted in safe mode then I went to Start>Run and entered Regedit and I found the screensaver what was doing this stuff to my PC and deleted it. Now my PC is working again.

The name of the screensaver is SysInternals BLUESCRN.SCR. I can't list the link to the program because I don't want someone to mess their computer up.

This doesn't really produce a BSOD, it simulates it ! A good way to scare your friends, i did it once to my neighbor ...  ;D

Introduction

One of the most feared colors in the NT world is blue. The infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) will pop up on an NT system whenever something has gone terribly wrong. Bluescreen is a screen saver that not only authentically mimics a BSOD, but will simulate startup screens seen during a system boot.
•

On NT 4.0 installations it simulates chkdsk of disk drives with errors!
•

On Win2K and Windows 9x it presents the Win2K startup splash screen, complete with rotating progress band and progress control updates!
•

On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 it present the XP/Server 2003 startup splash screen with progress bar!

Bluescreen cycles between different Blue Screens and simulated boots every 15 seconds or so. Virtually all the information shown on Bluescreen's BSOD and system start screen is obtained from your system configuration - its accuracy will fool even advanced NT developers. For example, the NT build number, processor revision, loaded drivers and addresses, disk drive characteristics, and memory size are all taken from the system Bluescreen is running on.

Use Bluescreen to amaze your friends and scare your enemies!

I got the file, I sent it to jotti.org and they said: INFECTED/MALWARE (Note: this file has been scanned before. Therefore, this file's scan results will not be stored in the database).
 Can you describe that?

I would recommend VirusTotal over Jotti as it uses more AV scanners and has a better interface(IMO). You can use both though ...
These detection's by various scanners are detecting the file as a JOKE program(meaning it's harmless) ...

Virus Total results:

Jotti results:

Ok, you win, it's safe to run the program on a PC. Good, I'll put that program on my boyfriend's computer and see what happens lol.
