Update problem
« on: May 16, 2007, 03:20:58 PM »
My laptop refuses to download the 11th May update when I click on it in start-up and therefore won't recognize subsequent updates until that one is installed. It also doesn't click on the VRDB icon.

I have Vista Ultimate on my Toshiba Tecra M1; I did manage to download the update, but it went to a separate part of the PC. I'm reluctant to uninstall avast and reinstall, as I'm not sure if the same problem might recur when there's a new 'install' upgrade.

Any thoughts appreciated as ever, thanks!

Please, post the last 50-100 files of avast log file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
Are you using avast Home or Pro version?

Anyway, you can try install from the scratch and see what you get, at least once.

I can't find the log link you want but I have looked in my computer security and it says 4.7.942[vps000740-2] 'reports it is up to date'. Is that the latest one?
I am using home free edition; are you saying it is possible to have two avast free installed at the same time?!  ;D

Using windows explorer, navigate to the path given by Tech, assuming you installed avast in the default location. If the DATA\Log\ folder or setup.log file aren't there then you may have a corrupt installation. Not wishing to put words in Tech's mouth, but he isn't saying it is possible to have two installations of avast, just to start from scratch, a clean installation.

First download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Now uninstall the existing avast version using the add remove programs, reboot.
Now install the latest version you downloaded, reboot, this will give you a clean install (from scratch Tech mentioned).

This way you have the latest version before you uninstall as outlined above and you will remain protected not having to go on-line without protection.

For sure not... the latest program version is 4.7.1001.

No, I'm saying that you could uninstall, boot, install again the latest version, boot.

Thanks for answrs:
Tech:
Looking at the home page I think I might have the latest update - VPS: 000740-2 16.5.2007
Is the number you quote (4.7.1001) not avast home pro?
If not I will do as you suggest David; but I guess the real test will come when a full install is required.

The avast version numbering is the same for home and pro (so the one given by Tech is the latest), it is possible to have the latest VPS without having the latest program version, but it always advisable to have the latest program version.

Check the about avast (right click the avast icon) for the program version number.

Similar problem here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=28267.msg231650#msg231650
I suggest you install the last version from the scratch.

Thanks team, I have done all the uninstall reinstall bits and appear to be ok, I guess I will only know for sure after a few updates etc; but in case anyone has vista ultimate and has a similar problem there is a manual update available go to computer>programmes>change/uninstall a programme>avast, and option available to search for update; but then I guess you know that already!!
Thanks again you are all brill!

You're welcome; just to let you know today I got the first 'new version' since this thread.
Once again I was unable to click on the on screen message, but this time I right clicked the avast icon, left clicked programme update and have downloaded it that way, with an apparently successful restart.

I have an unrelated quick question. I live alone and my main computer's avast will be due for renewal in September but I am away for several weeks; can I renew before it is formally due? Thanks.

Yes you can, complete the avast! 4 Home Registration form and you will receive an email from register @ avast.com (without the spaces) with your registration key.
