Yesterday's update blocks interner access
« on: August 02, 2007, 05:36:35 PM »
v 4.7.1029 loaded onto my computer yesterday. Now I can't get on the internet unless I disable Avast. Any idea what made Avast incompatible with my computer?
I also disabled ZoneAlarm at one point and left Avast running and I was able to get on the internet.
Thanks in advance.

I assume that you 'aren't' using the avast4 server version, perhaps one of the moderators can move it to the correct forum.

What you have done confirms firewall blocking. After a program update avast processes change and your firewall should 'ask' about the changed processes and you should have allowed it.

Check the Program Control in ZA - Does it allow ashWebSv.exe internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it (or change it to allowed) and reconnect to the internet and browse, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

Thanks. Didn't realize I was in the wrong forum.Oops!
I checked for the Ashweb file in the program control and it's not listed.

As David pointed out, that program (ashweb) needs access.

I also use ZoneAlarm and have mine set to 'Medium'... and states, "Program must ask for internet access and server rights".  You can find this setting by opening ZoneAlarm, click the 'Program control' on the left and make sure the top tab is set to 'main'.  Then to the right uder 'program control', move the slider to 'meduim'. Then close Zonealarm and try to reconnect with your browser again.

When ever I update avast to a new ver. program, Zone Alarm will notice the new program and I'll see a pop up from ZAP telling me it wants access. Just click ok and 'remember' this setting.

Hope this helps.

If as you say you can't find an entry for the Web Shield, ashWebSv.exe and if what Rick suggests doesn't work for you. Then you could try this, I don't know if it is possible to manually add an application to the ZA Program Control, if so this is the location of the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe file.
