So you set it to none but the settings didn't save? I.e. it still says hover.wav - or does it say None and you still hear it?

What if you delete the hover.wav file? :)

Why don't you do as I suggested earlier, rename the file where I said it was, C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ENGLISH\hover.wav (hover2.wav, etc.) if nothing else it will rule it out if you continue to hear the click/beep then it is something else.

I renamed it and it still didn't work then I deleted it and it still didn't work. The thing I did notice was when I changed from hover to none and then went back in my settings and tried to change it back to hover all the avast sounds were gone. The only sounds that were in the list were windows sounds. But I checked all the windows sounds and I can't find the sound I am hearing now. But I want to know what happened to all the avast sounds. They are still listed in my C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ENGLISH\ folder but not in the sound settings list.

If you renamed it and then deleted it then it can't be that which is responsible for the sound. More likely to have been the windows sounds that you mentioned, but what is the question.

There is under the Windows sounds, Default Ding (Ding.wav) that would appear to be what you heard "I hear a ding sound."

I have no idea where your Avast sounds have gone from the list, perhaps if you disable them they aren't on the list, just checked that and they still appear on my list (XP Pro). From the things that have been happening there does appear to be a problem in the Windows 'Sounds and Audio Devices' Properties.
