Hi there, On the 7th of August I received a computer for my birthday and it had no antivirus on there and so I did a search and found that you had a free one and so I registered per your site requirements and you sent me a key to use with it and it said to copy and paste it and so I did that and then this morning a pop up came up and said you appreciate me using your software but to buy it or something to that effect

This is the numbers that I am using so can you let me know what I am doing wrong? I totally thought it was free and it stated that on your site. It took the number just fine so whats up?
Thank you kindly
PS I do not have the funds to buy and antivirus right now.

Hi anonymous2uiam,

avast! is 100% free for home use.

This is the correct page for registration:

http://www.avast.com/eng/home-registration.php

Make sure you download avast! Home Edition from here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

And get a free registration key here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/home-registration.php

Apart from doing so, there shouldn't be any problems. Unless there is some problem on ALWIL end. I'm sure someone from ALWIL will come by soon ;)

yes that was the address I got it from and it said it was free in the lower left corner on one of avast pages and then I had to register and they sent me a key to cut and paste to my email address that I just signed up for. I did that then it said it was going to do a boot thingy of some sort then it restarted I hope the heck I am not in any trouble. I did everything I was asked to do. I guess I am running scared but I am new to computers and so of course I would be scared as one hears so much stuff about computers and pirates on the programs you use.
Thanks for replying and I will see what happens.

Can you please check your computer date? There has to be something wrong if avast! accepted the key but later reported status as expired...

avast is free and won't ask you to buy the Professional version unless you're using the Trial version and the trial period expired (60 days on the first installation, 6 days if you install twice in the same computer).

See the tutorial:  http://www.avast.com/files/tutorials/insert_key.htm

oh wow the date is not right. I just learned how to set it and so I shall see if that makes it better. I sure hope so I don't like worrying about things.

Thank you for your help. I appreciate it very much.
Thanks again and have a nice evening.

FYI this is not exactly correct. After a year's use of the Home Edition, the user is given a choice to either renew the Home Edition license (i.e. re-register), or upgrade to the Professional Edition.
