Avast Home 4 losing all providers on Windows98 SE
« on: August 13, 2007, 08:27:48 AM »
Dear Avast users,
I seem to have lost all of my provider-modules.
On a rather old HP omnibook xe3 laptop with Windows98 SE installed avast! has been running without any problem for some months. When I turned it on after a week (holiday) scandisk gave me a bad block on the partition avast is installed on. When it finally booted the avast icon showed a red sign and the tooltip read 0 providers total 0 running.
I downloaded the setup utility from the avast homepage and tried "change".
As this did not help I uninstalled avast, rebooted, installed avast again, rebooted again, configured my mail protection and tried setting up On-Access Protection but all providers were greyed out and when clicking "start" I got a red warning that "this provider was not found on the system".
What should I do next?
Changing my OS is _not_ an option.
Thank you for your suggestions

Uninstall avast and boot. You should use the avast removal tool found here

http://avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

1) download the removal tool from the link above (save it to your desktop, easy to find there   )
2) uninstall avast via add/remove
3) boot
4)run the avast removal tool
5) boot
6)install the newest version

What did the trick was to remove the folder avast had been installed into and after a third reboot reinstall into a different one.

Thank You for your assistance I feared, avast might not support Windows 98 any more after Microsoft has terminated their support for this OS.

greetings
G

Glad you got it going. Avast support for win98se still going strong  8)

Welcome to the forum!

What did the trick was to remove the folder avast had been installed into and after a third reboot reinstall into a different one.

The tool if used would have removed the original folder.

Most probably you were trying to install avast in a folder with non latin characters (accented ones)... Am I right?

Thank You for your assistance I feared, avast might not support Windows 98 any more after Microsoft has terminated their support for this OS.
No, it's supported and will be... just that new features won't be developed for this OS anymore.

no, I only use lowercase letters for my folders (not even blanks or underscores)
But what annoys me most, is that I now have 6 providers total and none of them running  and when I try to start one of them I am told

the requested resident taks was not fount on the system

bad news :-(

Please, post the last 100-150 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

Sorry, I am afraid the log of the corrupted install is gone.
I retried wiping the installation with the remove tool and installed in into a different partition.
This new install is (still) working satisfactorily.

Should the problem reappear I will be glad to send you the logfile.

If you think it can help you debugging you can have the log of the working install, too, of course.

here are the last lines of the current install as requested

Greetings G

Good that you got it going. I suspect that the removal tool removed some corrupt files, that simply deleting the old folder didn't. That's why the tool is usually reccommended.

You're using the Trial version, please, register for Home user or buy the Professional version.
If this is not the 'first' installation, you'll have something like 6 days to do so or avast will disable updatings and protection...

I seem to have lost all of my provider-modules...with Windows98 SE installed avast!... avast icon showed a red sign and the tooltip read 0 providers total 0 running...I uninstalled avast, rebooted, installed avast again, rebooted again, configured my mail protection and tried setting up On-Access Protection but all providers were greyed out and when clicking "start" I got a red warning that "this provider was not found on the system"

I had a similar thing happen last night.  I've never used avast! before, but I was looking for a Windows 98 virus scanner so I installed avast! 4.7.1029 on a fully patched fresh Windows 98SE install to try it out. Some updates were downloaded and Avast loaded but all the providers were greyed out and pressing the Start button did not start them.  I tried rebooting and manually starting them again, but they would not.  Uninstalling and Reinstalling did not help either.  After searching the forums I found the following suggestion and it worked, but it seems avast! may have an installation or update issue.  It was not a good experience for a new user.
Uninstall avast and boot. You should use the avast removal tool found here

http://avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

1) download the removal tool from the link above (save it to your desktop, easy to find there   )
2) uninstall avast via add/remove
3) boot
4)run the avast removal tool
5) boot
6)install the newest version

And does it solve the problem?

Uninstalling and Reinstalling did not help either.
Are you installing avast is which path?
