install on XP - PROBLEM
« on: August 31, 2007, 02:14:15 PM »
hi

i recently downloaded avast! Home Edition cos i heard many good things about it, and i needed anti virus software. So, the download was complete, and i double clicked on setupeng.exe ... ok all good and well, a little thingy with two maps came up, then the installation intro, but after 3 seconds it closed down... wtf?

i tried again and got to the 'I agree' part, but it closed down again...

What's up with that?  :'(

We will need more information to be able to help you:
- Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
- Where are you downloading avast! from?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?
- Any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially 'Errors'.

If you have been without AV software for a time, malware seems to me to be a fairly likely culprit.
What to do?
Well, I'd be inclined to download a demand scanner like http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/ and/or an antispyware/antitrojan scanner like Spybot, Superantispyware, Asquared, SpywareTerminator, or AVG Antispyware, and try running them (not together) in safe mode. (Google the names of the AS listed above, usually the first unsponsored result is the home page, for AVG I think you need "free-grisoft")
Be interesting to see what is found.

Please, is there a log? If so, post the last 100-150 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

Did you have any other antivirus in the past?

Please, make a HijackThis log to post here and, specially, scan and submit to on-line analysis the RunScanner log would help to identify the problem and the solution.

PS.
If you run any security software, and you aren't used to doing so, it would be best not to get it to "fix" "clean" or "delete" anything without checking first.
You can end up breaking windows if you delete the wrong files.
Techs' suggestion is probably best.
Mine is just what I'd do.
