In my reports every file lists - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process (32) Is this why I always have 0 infected files? Or have they actually been scanned?

Some examples of the file names and locations of these would help to see if these are legitimate use.

Files that can't be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned. This should have no bearing on having 0 infected files or do you suspect you are infected and if so why ?

Are you using Windows XP/Vista?
Can you schedule a boot-time scanning?
Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning.
Select for scanning archives.
Boot.
If infected files are found, it's safer to send them to Chest instead of deleting them.
This way you can further analysis them.

Or just run:
C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4\sched.exe /A:*

Access denied means, generally, that the file is in use by another process (program) and cannot be repaired/cleaned/moved/handled by avast!
The report file is created automatically in <avast4>\Data\Report\aswBoot.txt
