What is wrong with the firewall you are using already ?
No rush.

because I only use the Windows default firewall which I think is less secure, so I need a third-party firewall that can protect me from attacks by hackers or malicious programs

Well "attacks by hackers or malicious programs" is already covered by the web shield and file system shield.

The only difference with most 3rd party firewalls is external checking, programs, etc. already on your system trying to get out, phone home.  To get on to your system they first have to get past your antivirus program (whichever you use).

Since upgrading to the new version.  The password manager does not work in firefox.  Sometimes, I will get the unlock screen and enter the word, then the screen blinks off, but the passwords are not auto populating the fields.  When I click on the icon, a message comes up that it is locked.  I have to open the avast program and sign in there and navigate to the password section, in order for the user name and password field to populate on the website.  This is with any website.  I have removed and reinstalled the browser extension.

This new version has  made my computers run slower so think I'm going to uninstall and install  again.

Hi, Slavo, Uninstalled old version and installed new logo avast version, as I experienced problem with old version wifi inspector.
I downloaded the offline installer and installed with no problem.
A kind of suggestion:
        While avast closes the installation, there was a blank gap of few minutes before, avast prompts you for first scan. Here i would suggest a kind of continuance of any progress bar or something to denote that all has been well done . I checked for avast application in the task bar, in the application tab.
I could see some processes of avast ran in the process tab.
I know that avast will popup after a few seconds or minutes to prompt first smart scan.
But new users may not know this , and would be wondering where is the progress bar that something being done in the background before it popups the avast interface.
        I hope that you will consider my request , so that , when all the installations of done, a message to the effect that avast has finished installation and would be opening in a few seconds or minutes like alerts.
        I am a long years user of avast and if it is feasible , consider it

How long does it take for Avast Free to automatically update to the new version?
I know I could do it manually, but I'm voluntarily waiting to see after how many days it updates to the new version.
Until today still nothing.
On another PC, however, it has already happened for about a week.

There is an update cycle as all hundreds of millions of users can't get at once.  So there is a period of time a few weeks before all would get it or the download servers couldn't handle the load.

How they work out the update cycle is beyond me.  Not that it effects me as I have Program Updates set to Manual.
