servers.def, avast cannot connect to updates
« on: September 13, 2007, 11:58:38 PM »
Hi!

You always say download servers.def and give a link http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def

When I go to that link I see a text like :
[servers]
count=166

[server0]
name=Download73 AVAST server
url=http://download73.avast.com/iavs4x
stats=http://download73.avast.com/cgi-bin/iavs4stats.cgi

and so on....

Could you explain, please, how can I download specific file servers.def??? Should I copy that text somewhere and paste? or ???

My original problem is awast updates which stoped working from today. Before everything was perfect. I have Vista Business and Windows Firewall. Tried to stop firewall, but no effect. Checked proxy, as you recommend, no effect. I have servers.def, but anyway trying to download new one servers.def

Always? No, only in (rare) cases when the original servers.def file gets cleared for some reason (i.e. has 0 bytes length). There's no need to do anything about the servers.def file otherwise.

When I go to that link I see a text like :
[servers]
count=166

[server0]
name=Download73 AVAST server
url=http://download73.avast.com/iavs4x
stats=http://download73.avast.com/cgi-bin/iavs4stats.cgi

Yes, that's the content of the servers.def file.

Could you explain, please, how can I download specific file servers.def??? Should I copy that text somewhere and paste? or ???

There's no "specific" servers.def file - only this one. The file should be in the Setup subfolder of avast! installation folder.

What error message do you get?

Thanks for replay.

I mean what shoul I do with that text, which I see in this link http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def ???
I go to the link and..., what is my next step? Copy that text. Open servers.def on my PC, and paste it to the servers.def??? How can I open servers.dev from my PC, which application should I use.

I disabled Windows Firewall, but cannot connect any way.
Also when I tryed proxy in Avast, i Click a button "connection test". Connection failed in Direct connection and Auto detect (I dont have proxy).
I did manual updates, it works. But no succes in auto updates after that anyway.

If you did need to download it, right click on the link, and depending on your browser select save as or save link as, you will see the servers.def file name choose a location to save it to. You would then replace the old servers.def file with the new one.

What you were seeing is actually opening the file (left clicking the URL) in your browser as it is just a text file so it can be viewed in a browser.

I've asked for official help here... I can't guess more what is wrong in your update process.

You won't find it as it isn't a permanent file it is created at the time of update and is made of from the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.ovr file. Once the update is complete it is removed.
