When it freezes, is it possible to left click the "a" icon on the taskbar and see what avast is scanning? Or is everthing including the mouse frozen?

The mouse is not frozen but the sand clock appears after I right click and I don't have access to "a".

What would happen if you turned on standard shield's show detailed info on the advanced tab? Perhaps that would show what avast is scanning.

Other than that, I'm out of ideas.

After turning on the detail info and restart the PC when I right click on the desktop in order to see what it was scanning it show a file from Abobe but the strange thing was that it didn't freeze. ???
When I turned of the detail info in order to see if that was the problem and restart again with the right click everything was working fine. I have tried a couple of times and so far no problem.
I am not jumping in conclusions so I will try again later a few more times and see what happens.
Could that check and uncheck of the detail info solved the problem? :o

Two or three questions, maybe unrelated:

1. Did you use Norton and fully removed it? Which other Symantec products did you use?
2. Is the two letters at right of the clock a normal thing on your language or not?
3. Any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially 'Errors'?

Could that check and uncheck of the detail info solved the problem? :o
I don't think so... maybe other 'hidden' action that you've done or the computer take...

Yes. Win Fax and Ghost but they were unistalled before installing avast again.
2. Is the two letters at right of the clock a normal thing on your language or not?
Yes they are normal

3. Any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially 'Errors'?

In which field ? Programms, Security, System, Antivirus, or Internet explorer?

If it freezes again, please try to press Ctrl+Shift+Escape to invoke the Task Manager. Would that work?

You said that your update option is set to dial-up connection; I assume that means that uploading a huge file to our server might be a problem...?

This setting does not work like 0 or 1, off or on.
It's for seconds to wait after booting and trying to update.
See 'Settings' in my signature for full explanation.

Pressing Ctrl+Shift+Escape does work. That is how I log off in order to unfreeze. The option to dial-up was set manually just as oldman said for troubleshooting. No uploading a file wouldn't be a problem.

Yes I get some errors on Service Control Manager, Dhcp, DCOM those on System but they are few days old. And a few errors in programms also few days old. The latest on one is nview_info.

As I said before since yesterday after turning on the detail info and then turning it of when I right click on the desktop I don't have the freezing problem any more. I tried to put every option to default such as automatic updates and permanent connection to internet and taking of the delay loading the avast and i had the problem again. When i took them out it was running smoothly. The only thing that I have to chech now is to take them out one by one and see which of the three is causing the problem. I just hope that avast is stable and wan't have the same problem again. But why did that happen? I mean before the detail info the options on avast where set as you gays adviced me. Could it be one fo those things that PC 's do ;D

Well I don't know how turning on then off show detailed info "cured" it. Could be 'one fo those things that PC 's do". Please post back if it happens again. I think Igor wanted to try something.

Sorry, Some days..... you know  ;D
