Avast with BitDefender Free v10?
« on: September 16, 2007, 06:25:14 PM »
I have seen some older posts here where members have successfully used previous versions of BD A/V scanner with Avast, but haven't seen anything current. Is anyone using the latest v10? Any problems?

For the current version there isn't a free one. You need to pay.
For the on-demand scanning only, and free, you need to use older version.
This is BitDefender policy.

Thanks Tech. So, is v10 the older version? ??? That's the one I DL from the Free Products section on their site.

It's new to me... I'll take a look. I thought the version 10 will only be available if the new 11 (payed) is released.

Thanks. It's like I've thought.
They released the BitDefender 2008 Suite and the version 10 became free 8)
I'll test it.

Great! The problem I've encountered is two BD services (BDRsDrv and BDFsDrv) are not starting because the files are missing. I think this is just a clean-up problem from when they changed the program from paid to free. It appears there are still registry entries calling for these services (probably some real-time protection) but the files themselves were deleted from the free version. This hasn't seemed to compromise the program, though, and you won't get any pop-up messages. I first found out about it when I noticed two error messages in Event Viewer, always corresponding to a boot/ reboot. Others have noticed this, too, and I added to their thread on the BD Forum. No definitive answer yet.

Let me know how you make out, Tech.

Hello Jahn

I've been using BitDefender 10 on demand with Avast 4.7 with no problems, just remember to pause provider Avast Standard Shield while scanning with BitDefender and then resume provider when you are done. Only issue I had with BitDefender was 2 false positives terminator.exe (part of HP/bin supposed to be there) and wildtangent part of the games update program. It moved both to the virus vault which I restored with no problem.

I couldn't find the 'actions' settings when a virus is found.
On older versions you could choose two actions (repair > report only, for instance).
It's dangerous not having this possibility and having to follow repair > move to quarantine automatically because of false positives.
Take care!

Thank you John and Tech. No errors in Event Viewer>System?

I couldn't find the 'actions' settings when a virus is found.

Tech, if you haven't found it yet, those settings are at Anti-virus tab> Quarantine tab> Settings.

Sorry Tech :-[, what you're looking for is at: Anti-virus tab> Scan tab> Click the Properties icon to the left of each task> Overview tab> Click Custom> scroll to Action to take...

Do you have any errors in Event Viewer> System? I'm getting two 7000 errors since I installed BD. ???

Which are they? Can you post an error message sample?
