Trouble getting started - beginner

How does avast work?  I did manage to find the Simple user interface screen, at least that's what it says it is, but when I click on one of the selections, all I get is a description and a link back to the home page.

What I'm tring to do is disable avast.

Right click the avast icon in your system tray and choose "Stop On-Access Protection and Exit"... that will effectively turn off avast.

You can also Pause a Provider from the same menu.

I did that, and I think that much of it worked because if I right click on the blue ball it now says START avast anti virus as the second item.  But when I go into the start/programs menu and call up avast I get a little green and white screen that says Test of Memory and Startup.  And it rattles of all these system file names.  Is it supposed to do that?
