Avast 4 home, and Windows Vist Ultimate
« on: September 22, 2007, 11:25:11 PM »
I hope some one can help. When I install the latest Avast anti virus, windows updates will no longer work. I am stuck with AVG, and would like to use Avast. Updates says that it cannot update. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I use only the windows firewall, and nothing else.
Regards Graeme

Strange, very strange...
Did you fully uninstall AVG before installing avast?
Which is your operational system?
Which firewall do you use?

Well avast isn't a firewall and as such shouldn't have any impact on windows update, avast's Web Shield simply scans http port 80 traffic for infection and will alert you if any is found, but it doesn't block.

If you still had AVG installed when you installed there could most certainly be a conflict between the two but why this would represent itself only at the windows update site is beyond me. I assume that with avast and the web shield enabled you are able to browse other http web pages ?

Vista firewall is sufficient with Avast.  And in the 6 months I have been running them I have had no conflicts at all.  It may be a windows update problem I will do a little research on that as I know XP can sometimes do this for no apparent reason

I fully uninstalled AVG before installing Avast. I have tried this 3 times with the same result that windows update will no longer work. It works ok after I uninstall Avast, and reinstall AVG
Thank you for your reply. Graeme

From Graeme. the rest of the web works fine. This only affects windows update. The only other security I have is windows fire wall. I have tried this 3 times with the same result.

Which firewall do you use?
Can you answer these ones?
Do you use any proxy application (like annonimizers)?

I think he has the title of the topic points to the OS, Vista Ultimate and the post before yours and in his first post, indicates he uses the windows firewall.

Sorry, my fault.
Basically, check the log files (or post the last 200 lines of the logs):
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
or C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log
