RPC error
« on: September 28, 2007, 08:35:37 PM »
Ok, my computer started giving me a an error "Avast the AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error" whenever it boots up. I recently upgraded my memory to 2 Gig OCZ Platinum and that is when it give me the error. If I put the 1 Gig of basic ram, it works fine. Any ideas?

I wouldn't have though a RAM upgrade would have had this effect, though your experience says differently. But I honestly can't see how it could cause an RPC (remote procedure call) error and it may be nothing more than coincidence.

Have you tried just one stick of the OCZ RAM or switching the RAM in the slots, again this I feel is clutching at straws as I really can't see how it could have this effect.

AAVM subsytem detected and RPC error. http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-other-questions.html#idt_1539
Check out this FAQ and see if it resolves the problem, though I suspect not. The RPC error is often associated with having another AV installed or remnants.

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

Yeah, I tried one stick and swapped both and still the same. I know it is wierd, but it's happening. I had Norton before and used their Norton Removal Tool to get rid of it. Not sure why basic ram works but high performance ram won't. I am stumped.

We will need more information to be able to help you:
- Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
- What avast! version?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system right now?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?
- Any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially 'Errors'.

Sorry, should have stated that already! LOL

Anyway, I am using Windows XP Pro, all service packs installed and fully updated (so far). Using Avast Pro 4.7, Windows Firewall with another firewall in my router. No other anti-virus. Have Spybot and Ad-Aware SE installed.  Don't have the Error reports available at the moment (at office).

Did you have any other antivirus in this computer in the past?
How did you uninstall it?

:-\ Already posted a reply to that, but I'll post it again. I had Norton before and used their Norton Removal Tool to get rid of it. That's they only other Anti-Virus I've had.

1) Can you use, again, Norton Removal Tool.
2) Boot.

And then follow the full SymNRT info:

1. Download and save these three files to the Windows desktop:
   a) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/MSIFIX.bat
   b) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SymNRT.exe
   c) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SYMMSICLEANUP.reg

2. Run the three files that you just downloaded
   a) On the Windows desktop, double-click the MSIFIX icon.
      Click Run.
A black window may appear very briefly.
   b) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SymNRT icon.
      Click Run.
      Click Next.
Click I accept the License Agreement, and click Next.
Type the letters and numbers that you see in the white box, and then click Next.
Click Yes or OK at each prompt.
You may need to click more than once. Your computer may be restarted for you more than once.
You may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.
   c) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SYMMSICLEANUP icon.
Click Run, and then click Yes.
      Click OK.

3. Boot.

Well I would think that your problem is somewhat different because of the action you took "delay avast services loading before system services" where the original poster hasn't done that and there is also a possible issue with a previous AV that is a common cause of the AAVM - RPC error.
