Problem Accessing the Internet with Wireless
« on: January 14, 2007, 07:57:54 PM »
I can connect to my wireless router, which I know is connected to the internet (because I've tried with an ethernet cord), but my laptop won't access the Internet. I can't browse web pages nor use AIM. What should I do?

We will need more information to be able to help you:

- Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
- What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
- Which actions have you taken to try solving the problem?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one? Are avast components, specially WebShield, allowed to connect?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?

I'm using: Windows XP Home; it is up to date.
Avast 4.7 Home Edition; VPS file version 000703-0.
I have ran Spybot, Adaware, and Ewido Antimalware. I tried disabling Avast! to see if that was a problem but nothing changed.
I use Windows firewall, and avast! is listed as an exception.
No other antivirus software being used.
I don't know of any other security problems.
Note- I can connect via ethernet cable, just not wireless. Also, I don't think Avast! is the problem (hence the post in the Off-Topic) but you guys have been helpful b4 so that's why I posted in the Avast forum.

I also tried running Avast! on reboot.

I had the same problem with Avast, after upgrading.  Here's what I did.

1.  Check the wireless connect button on your laptop to ensure that your wireless is enabled. On my Acer, it was a clear button just below the lid clip (when closed), on the right.  Once I confirmed it was enabled.

2. Go to Control Panel >Services or RUN services.msc
3. Scroll to the bottom and highlight Wireless Zero Configuation
4. Restart Wireless Zero Configuration.

That should solve it under Windows XP.
