Doc files and photos gone after entering activation key

Last Monday, I entered an activation code for VPN. 
Restarted my laptop.
Documents and photos gone from Quick Access, My PC - cannot find them anywhere.  ALso gone were my bookmarks, desktop files (not program files though), screen saver.
Have searched in most of the obvious places. No luck.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and/or have any suggested solutions.

Do you use any PC cleaning or PC maintenance software?
Perhaps you had a Windows update that caused this issue? It might be a corrupted windows profile. You could try these steps to regain access to your original profile by rebooting into the Safe Mode:
1. Boot into Safe Mode by clicking "Restart" while holding the Shift key on the login screen.
2. Reboot into normal mode. Your PC should start normally and restore your user profile.
