I'm using Avast Home 4.7 on my wired to a WiFi gateway WinXPpro PC. I also have a WiFi laptop with WinVistaHome and Norton IS on it. I cannot access my shared folders from the laptop although NIS is configured to trust the other machine. If Avast is working as an Antivirus/Firewall then how do I set it up to trust all connections coming from the laptop?

avast is not a suite like NIS (thanks God!).
avast is only an antivirus. You must uninstall Norton Antivirus or, better, uninstall all NIS, install avast, then install only the firewall.
If you have Norton antivirus (NAV) and avast in the same computer you're asking for trouble and conflicts...
