Avast Free Web Shield High CPU
« on: November 20, 2021, 06:45:00 PM »
So, looking for assistance. As of 11/19/21 I have been having an issue with the Web Shield module where whenever I load any web page (does not appear it matters which browser, as I've experienced it with Mozilla/Edge/Explorer) the CPU utilization of the 'Avast Service' process takes my idle CPU from 3% all the way up to 80-91% utilization, with no other applications running (just after boot).

I have performed the action of opening a fresh page/refreshing an existing page with the Web Shield Enabled and Disabled.
With Web Shield Disabled, my CPU utilization will go from 3% to between 17-34%.
With Web Shield Enabled, my CPU utilization will go from 3% to between 80-91%.

From my perspective, and what I'm normally accustomed to, is my CPU utilization spiking in the manner represented when Web Shield is disabled. It spikes, and bottoms back to normal. With Web Shield Enabled, and my CPU spiking to 99% and 100% just because I refreshed a website is both unusual and unacceptable; as I normally have multiple applications running, so I will idle on average at 33% most times. Meaning under normal usage, my computer will be redlining quite often.

For reference, my PC Specs are the following:
Core i9 - 3.6 GHz
32 GB RAM
Geforce RTX 3080
Windows 10

Not a super computer, but certainly not a calculator from the dollar store.

I have rebooted my computer several times; I've verified that Avast is up-to-date, and I've been using Avast Free for a good 5+ years now without this sort of issue. Outside of uninstalling and reinstalling, I've attempted to disable the other settings within Avast Web Shield to see if I can stop this excessive CPU utilization, but the only setting that seems to have any effect is just disabling 'Enable Web Shield' altogether.

Is this an issue with the Web Shield module within Avast or is this the new way of life going forward? Because if it is, I'm going to have to look for alternatives because I don't want an Antivirus red-lining my CPU just because I opened a web page.
