If you use Steven Harper's USB ADSL Modem Manager, it appears to be broken in 7.10, meaning no internet connection.

Also no desktop effects with an ATI X1600 card, even though the same feature worked in PCLinuxOS.

(USB modem also enabled in PCLinuxOS out of the box.)

Why am I using Umbongo? No sound in PCLinuxOS.  ::)

Ho hum.

I have sound in PCLinuxOS and everything works just great, that's why I really love PCLinuxOS... but I am also willing to give Kubuntu a try. No USB ADSL modems here, no ATI X1600 so there is a chance I will not be affected with these bugs. I am sure they will try to fix it. But also I am sure there will be some other bugs... I on't have too good experiences with Ubuntu/Kubuntu installations. Always something didn't work... either GFX effects, or sound or something third... but, I'll try this one and see how it goes.

Ubuntu 7.10 is pretty good so far  8), Kubuntu 7.10 is still the same half-wit brother of Ubuntu  :(  PCLinuxOS is the best KDE distro IMO

Looking forward to the Linux Mint version of 7.10  :P

That would be a funky looking OS, but no, Umbongo is what The Register calls Ubuntu:

Apparently it's a soft drink in the UK: I knew the name was familiar from somewhere:

I think you're thinking along the right lines, FastGa: as far as I could work out, it's a problem specific to my soundcard (RealTek) under the version of ALSA that PCLinuxOS uses.

I also have Realtek soundcard but it works. Maybe it's different model though.

I'm low in blank CD's, and my Linksys USB adapter (WUSB54G v4) isn't supported with Ubuntu, but it works with Ndiswrapper, so when my Ubuntu install discs come in I will use those to configure my desktop.

I am upgrading Ubuntu on my notebook as we speak ;D

Mine's  a Realtek ALC883. Funny thing is, problems with this chip and ALSA seem to have been fixed back in 2006. Maybe PCLinuxOS is using an older version?  ???

Anyway, I'm very happy with Ubuntu, or was until this upgrade totally borked my internet connection.

I really like the new Ubuntu but i also gave the new Mandriva 2008 and OpenSUSE 10.3 a try and astonishingly(for me at least) i found the new Mandriva works best  on my machine. Never had such a stable distro installed, not a single problem so far. Even the soundcard works and it never worked on this machine with previous Mandriva versions that i tried. It seems they really have improved on the hardware detection(among other things). This is also good news for PCLOS as it is based on Mandriva so the new versions of PCLOS should be really really good on hardware detection front. Oh and Compiz Fusion also worked out of the box on my nvidia geforce 6600gt. This is definitely the best version Mandriva ever made. Period.

Downloading live CD's Mandriva and OpenSUSE now to try out.

Mandriva sounds fun:

But anybody who uses Mandriva is either mad or French, or quite possibly both.

I love mad French technology, like my mad French car, where you have to take the wheel off to change the oil filter.

I am downloading it now as we speak... ubuntu/kubuntu definitely is not for my computer (AMD 64 X2). It works properly on my Intel Duo 2 Core but my AMD machine simply won't speak the same language with Ubuntu/Kubuntu. I am sure I am not the only one out there, and that's exactly the biggest reason why Ubuntu will never replace Windows. They have to change something drastically with hardware recognition, drivers support etc. You fire up PcLinuxOS and it simply works out of the box. That's what's called evolution of an OS. They are moving forward and not staying at one point making empty promises...

I will give this Mandriva 2008 a try and see how it works.

PCLinuxOS is a rolling release, keep it updated and you have the latest version (unless major code base change). There's a nice big update in testing (I'm using it) and it should be out shortly :)

Ubuntu 7.10 seems like a nice improvement, I'll wait for the Linux Mint version for the HD install.
