Took a big jump today, completely removed XP off of the notebook and now only have Ubuntu on it. For what I use the notebook for, Ubuntu should be perfect :)

Well I would put Vista on my notebook, but the Intel 915GM chipset doesn't run Aero, and I can't stand the Vista standard look so I just kept XP on it. But so far my Ubuntu experience is great ;D

I am in the process of building up a back-up comp out of spare parts. I will take the plunge and use Ubuntu 7.10 as the OS. I have never used any OS except Windows, so this will be a learning experience for me. I hope the learning curve is not too steep.

Depending on the amount of memory you can dig up with those spare parts, you could try Xubuntu, which is designed for older boxes, with limited memory. A friend of mine tells me that it runs fast and tidy on 256 meg.

Read about it here:

Xubuntu uses the Xfce desktop environment, meaning that it will run fast while still delivering a user-friendly interface. Older computers feel lively again, while newer ones will run faster than ever before!

Additional thought to ^.

That's the one thing about Linux. There's more choices than you can shake a stick at. Here's another possibility for "Frankenstein" built computers...

http://www.mepis.org/node/14171

MEPIS antiX 7.0

Quote
SimplyMEPIS is a ready to go desktop operating system for PCs and Apple computers that have Intel or AMD 32 or 64 bit processors. It is easier than Vista and intuitive for XP and Win98 users. MEPIS includes all of the applications that most users need and want. SimplyMEPIS is designed to replace or work side by side with Vista or XP on PCs and OSX on Apple computers.

Quote
AntiX is designed to work on computers with as little as 64MB RAM and Pentuim II or equivalent AMD processors but not K5/K6 processors. After installation, even 32MB RAM has worked. The new ISO images are available in the 'released/antix' subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber's Site and at the MEPIS public mirrors.
