Avast annoying upsell pop up?
« on: December 21, 2021, 01:45:25 AM »
I had to get a new computer so did a clean install of Premium security. I did not have this problem on my old computer, so that makes me think I had found a way to fix it on that.  But, I cannot remember if or how I did it?

The settings show me signed in and my subscription being used on the new computer.  All seems well except that Avast itself is spamming me with an annoying pop up at least daily, trying to upsell me a more expensive version of Avast. I have tried turning off certain notifications, but the spam still comes.  I am reluctant to use silent mode because that seems to say it turns off all notifications and I don't mind getting notifications when Avast is doing its job and blocks something or finds something in a scan.  I just do not want to get the strong-arm advertising pop ups from Avast itself telling me that although I pay $69 yearly for Premium Security, I really should pay more for additional Avast products.

Is there any way to just turn off the in-program popups from Avast trying to upsell me?  Thanks.

These can be removed in paid versions of Avast - AvastUI > Menu > Settings > General - Personal Privacy and you can uncheck them, 'Show offers for other Avast Products' and 'Show offers for 3rd party products'.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.5.6116 (build 24.5.9153.762) UI 1.0.808/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

I believe I have determined the problem but not sure how to fix it?  Before I installed Avast on my new computer, I uninstalled it on my old computer, following instructions here:  https://support.avast.com/en-us/article/Transfer-Antivirus-subscription/

I then installed and activated it on my new computer.  If I look at my account online, it shows what appears to be installed on what it calls one "Windows PC".  But in the Avast program itself on my new computer, on the screen shown in the attached clip, if I hover over the "i" it tells me "your subscription is being used on two devices. This is more than allowed..."

This is incorrect, it is only installed on my new computer, not on the old computer.  I removed it from the old computer, following the instructions, before installing and activating it on my new computer.  The old computer is now defunct and not even online.  Not sure how to get this fixed?

From that screenshot, "...in the past 30days" may be significant.

Well, it was less than 30 days ago that I uninstalled the old computer and set up the new.  And, I see what you mean about the wording of the message.

But that makes no real sense at all.  It seems impossible that the powers at be at Avast would make any long-term paying customer who gets a new computer, have to live with the spam advertising for 30 days?  The Avast support instructions I followed and linked to above say nothing about anything like that.  So, it seems highly unlikely this would be the case. Thirty days of pop-up punishment for getting a new computer?

I suspect the problem lies somewhere else but I have searched this forum and cannot find the quick, easy solution so I have sent Avast Support an email.  Hopefully they will respond in a timely fashion.

@WillT,
Avast has been notified of your problem. Let's see if that helps. :)

Thank you.  I did send an email support request yesterday but have not had a reply yet.  I also tried calling twice but the phone line to Avast Support is very sketchy with lots of static and poor audio so I could not understand anything from them.

Hi,

If you received a "Renew Early" notification, it can be turned off by using silent mode (Menu > Settings > Notifications > Use silent mode)
The subscription information "Active on: 2 of 1 devices in the past 30 days" only refers to the fact that it was activated on two devices in the last thirty days.

No not a renew early.  What seems to have happened is that even though I followed Support instructions exactly when getting the new computer, Avast believes I am using my Premium subscription on two computers.  Of course that is not correct and the old computer is cleaned, off, and no longer connects online.  But Avast has seen fit to make my account behave like a free account.  As punishment, I guess for the incorrect assumption that I am trying to exceed the terms of my license.

So I get all the advertising pop ups that a free user would get, including constant pop ups to upgrade my Premium Security to "Premium Security".  Crazy but I am stuck with it I guess.  I contacted support a few days ago and someone here posted that they submitted the issue to support also on my behalf.  I have had no reply at all from Avast yet, but it is Christmas week.

I posted earlier the message shown on my Avast Account that I am illegally using the program on two computers.  That message says "within the past 30 days" So I am holding out hope that in a few weeks once I have gone past 30 days since uninstalling on the old computer and installing on the new, maybe it will fix itself even without any help from support.

Have you signed into your avast account ?
Or access it via your installation via the tray icon, you can click and select Registration information > from there select Go To Account.

There you should be able to go to the My Subscriptions, you should be able to Manage your Subscriptions, it may be that your old computer is still assigned to that subscription.

As r@vast mentioned
Quote from: r@vast
"Active on: 2 of 1 devices in the past 30 days" only refers to the fact that it was activated on two devices in the last thirty days.

So there is a 30 day period before the old one would drop off the radar so to speak.  But you should be able to deactivate that or assign it to the new computer.

Yeah I did all that as much as I could and just went there again to look.  It is activated and being used on the new computer.  I had followed all the Support instructions linked above to uninstall it on the old computer, etc. before I downloaded and activated it on the new computer.

I understand what you are saying about that 30 day message.  But it is odd as the last time Avast was activated on the old computer was years ago. I then used the program flawlessly until I uninstalled it on the old computer as directed here:  https://support.avast.com/en-us/article/78?option=pc  Then, after I did that, I downloaded, installed and activated it on the new computer.  Almost all looks good on the new computer settings and interface.  It shows me using the subscription and that it will renew in January. But the program is messaging me with popups like I have the free version and also prompting me to upgrade to Premium Security, which of course is the product I have installed and have been using all along.  Everything looks good online and in the program settings.... Except that on the subscriptions tab in the settings of the program, there is an info bubble that says:
Quote
"Your subscription is being used on two devices. This is more than is allowed for your single-device subscription. Please extend your subscription to cover the extra devices."

There must have been a glitch in the uninstall on the old computer or something, but without any help from support, I think I have done all that I can to fix it.  As noted before, I can hold hope that once 30 days have gone by without Avast sensing it having been used on the old computer, maybe my subscription will automatically be released to function normally?  Unless Support eventually responds to my requests and fixes it on their end, I don't think there is anything else that can be done.  Thanks for all the advice and suggestions.  I do understand that this is just a forum of users so I do appreciate the responsiveness here.

And now ?
If you return to your online account and click on "details"., what about ? "2 PC windows"?....just to check (at least) that the intruder is your old device and not another one (androïd,....)

Sorry, I see I did not write that above. It says "2 Windows PCs".  I only had the old PC and then this new one so those have to be the two referred to.

I can't really do anything further on the old PC as Avast was already uninstalled along with much else.  I also do not want that PC going online at all anymore just to be sure none of the other programs still installed on it, like OneDrive, Office, GSAK, etc. do any online communication.  After a time, and once I am sure all is perfect with the new PC, I will wipe the HD on the old computer and recycle it.

Just a note since you mentioned Android.  I have been looking at and thinking about changing my account to two devices just for that reason, (Android Phone).  Or, getting Avast One.  Started to investigate those possibilities but if I have questions, I will start a new thread just for those.  For now I wish I could get this fixed before my renewal date in a week.  If not, I may just stop the renewal of my current subscription and start over with a new one next year that is working correctly or a new Avast One subscription.
