Ransomware Shield slow to act
« on: December 24, 2021, 07:30:05 AM »
I used a video editor to save files to a Ransomware Shield protected folder. After using it for about an hour and saving many times, Avast pop up asking whether I should allow or deny this app. Why does it take so long and after I saved many times using it that it pop-up? If my app was ransomware, it would have damaged my data in my protected folder.

- Avast Free version 21.11 (latest)
- Windows 10 version 21H1 (Build 19043.1348)
- No other security software
- Before Avast, I used Kaspersky Security Cloud Free which has been uninstalled.

First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of any prior installed AV(s)..!!
-> https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/11/

Then:
1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions..!!)
3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

I used Avast Free on my laptop years ago. Then I used the utility to uninstall Avast totally before using Kaspersky. Then I uninstalled Kaspersky before reinstalling latest version of Avast Free.

So what has all this got to do with Ransomware Shield being slow to act? It has something to do with latest Avast and not the Avast I uninstalled years ago.

How was Kaspersky removed?
You'll find their removal program here,

I ran the Kaspersky removal utility. But do remnants of uninstalled Kaspersky really slow down Ransomware Shield?

That's not something I can answer. Leaving remnants of other AV's on the system
can affect overall performance.
Since you should now have a system that's been cleaned of all prior AV installations,
do a repair of Avast which you'll find under the troubleshooting settings, reboot and
see if you still experience your problem.

I did a clean uninstall of Avast Free and installed Avast One. Avast One prompted me immediately to allow or block some apps from accessing Ransomware Shield protected folders. In Avast Free, I removed all the apps allowed but it still prompted me after I used the apps many times. So I'm sticking with Avast One. Also, Avast One feels lighter.

I have uninstalled Kaspersky Security Cloud and then fresh installed Avast free 21.11. The subsequent performance of my Windows 10 running Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 (4GB RAM 1.83GHz Intel Core2 Duo) was excellent. It was obvious that Avast was working beautifully.
