How can I schedule the program to automatically perform a virus scan at times I specifiy, or can this not be done.

Do you have the Home Or Pro version. this makes a big diffrence

yes....only the pro version can schedule scans... ;D

You can handle with the Windows Tasks and ashquick.exe but, like the other users said, you can only use this avast! feature if you have the Professional version  8)
