This certainly isn't normal.

Try an Avast Repair.
AvastUI > Menu > Settings > General > Troubleshooting > APP Repair - Restart after completion.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Is there a slide bar on left/right side that you can slide to see more options?

Where are you looking (it should be there) ?

Open the Avast UI (User Interface), click the Menu (text or the three bars), now you should see a Settings option, that should open in the General section, scroll down to Troubleshooting and you should see it in that section.
See my attached image, click to expand.

It would have been helpful if you mentioned you were using XP as the last supported version for XP was/is 18.8.xxxx.  This is also where a screenshot would have useful as all of the users responding are most likely to be on 21.11.xxxx.

The problem in using XP is so very few forum helpers will be using it and will probably have forgotten the avast 18.8.xxxx interface and function.

What version/build number do you have  ?

You can try a repair via the Windows Control Panel > Programs and Features > select Avast Antivirus > click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

You should reboot after this.

I can't offer and guarantees as I'm not even working from memory, but old notes I made.

Without information it is hard to answer, even speculate.

When you have something like this happen (message/alert, etc.) do a selective screen capture, that way you have captured the information needed to help.

OK, after reading your post again, a little judicious speculation - I suspect this may have been offering the Avast Online Security (browser extension). See the sub forum for more information on it Avast Online Security (browser extension)

thanks david. I dont understand A   lot of this. only had one message today so far. from what i can see it seems to pop up after an update. when i opened the avast . it said i needed to restart pc at the bit for programme update. not the virus update. I did this and that seems to be gone now. I just dont understand why message keeps appearing like this so frequently. Thanks for help

You're welcome.
1.  Virus definition updates shouldn't require a restart.

2.  Program updates do require a restart for the changes to be implemented.
That said you still haven't told us what avast program version and build number you are using ?

With XP if you are using avast 18.8.xxxx, this is the last supported avast program version, so you shouldn't be getting any further program updates.
If you have avast version 18.8.xxxx, then you can set program updates to Manual and not Auto.

I already suggested what to do, as program version updates for XP have ended.
