Problems with Avast and also AVG with Windows 7/10 login/logout
« on: February 04, 2022, 03:31:06 PM »
Avast and AVG seem to be involved with causing Windows 7 and Windows 10 problems (probably Windows 8.1 too) with startups and shutdowns.  The problems disappear when Avast or AVG are uninstalled.   Is there a tool to scan Windows and reset whatever is causing this?

Neither Kaspersky Security Cloud free nor Panda Dome free have this problem and are my working alternatives when this problem arises.

What problem/s are you talking about as you don't give details. Error messages, etc.

I rarely do complete shutdowns on my windows10 laptop, putting it into hibernate when the lid is closed.

There are occasions when a restart is required after a program update or windows update and I haven't had any issues with the shutdowns or restarts.  My login after a restart is by email and password, I don't have (have avoided) a windows account.

No error messages are forthcoming. The affected systems just wait forever to shutdown.  No BSOD, nothing.

Along with Kaspersky Security Cloud free and Panda Dome free, Avast One is also not affected by this. That however is the only good thing that I can say about Avast One.

I have care of a friend's Windows 10 system.  I updated Avast free 21.5 to 21.10.  The system persistently hanged after startup, before login I think (I live 55 miles from the location of this system).  Again, there was no information of any kind displayed.  The only solution was to revert to the system backup I had fortunately just performed.  It continues to work fine with Avast 21.5.

You are not imagining things with the long shutdown problem.

It's existed since after version 20.4 or so on Windows7

There are a couple of old threads on it, Avast never solved the problem.

Starting happening May 2020, Avast had made some significant changes to the UI  which probably broke things

Also other things never been fixed (this bug already 2 years), like windows screensaver is always disabled when Avast/AVG is installed ... when there is an update or you install something else , always have to enable screensaver again.
When uninstall Avast everything is back to normal!

Personally I have never found a reason to use a screen saver, why bother with it, it isn't as if you are going to sit there and watch it.  Just have it go blank after a set time.

It's been going on since Avast 20.4!?!!?!  I have just found out that AVG exhibits the same misbehaviour.  Since Avast and AVG very obviously use a different GUI from each other, that suggests an amazing coincidence between the behaviour of the two GUIs or it is not caused by the GUI change.

From what I have seen of this unresolved issue, sooner or later more Avast/AVG users could also be affected.

Thanks Asyn.  I assume from your information that there is a specific fix in 22.1.

I am sorry to say that installing Avast free 22.1 did not resolve the issue. No error messages appeared.  The Windows 7 system just hanged at logout.

Hi, did you reboot twice..!? The first reboot after an update can take longer, but subsequent reboots should be ok.

The problem was that the Windows 7 system would not shutdown.  It hanged, probably during the logout process.

1. Enable debug logging (Menu > Settings > General > Troubleshooting > Enable debug logging) and reproduce the issue.
2. Follow instructions: https://support.avast.com/article/33/ and post the File-ID or name of the Support-File here afterwards.
