win 98 Avast 4.7 Error
« on: December 03, 2007, 12:44:40 PM »
Right folks yeah I know I must be almost the only person still using win98  :-[ but it works for me.

Anyhow , been using Avast for ages on it and its been fine then all of a sudden I noticed the ressi protection had a stopped sign by it , going in and trying to start it brings up a warning window

"The requested Resident task was not found, the opperation could not be completed"

So carried out an update, still no joy, uninstalled it, downloaded it again and tried again this time it worked for a few hours I think or atleast until I rebooted from memory and then it stopped again with the same warning if I tried to re-start, so again un-installed and re-installed but now it wont play at all with the ressi protection, normal manual scanning of the drives seems to work but not the ressi stuff ??

Whats next to try??

To reassure you about ongoing compatibilty, I have Avast Home on 2 x 98SE and 2 x 95OSR2 machines without any problems. Also, 3 family members have Avast and 98SE on their home PCs and AFAIK, everything's okay.

Are you sure there is no other resident scanning component left over from a previous anti-malware product (did anyone say Norton?) that could be causing conflict?

Have you tried only installing "Standard Shield" to see if that makes any difference.

Some malware will try to shut down AV before unpacking themselves. If you don't already have it, SUPERAntispyware Free Edition http://www.superantispyware.com is very good, especially for an "ancient" OS like 98.  ;D.

I'm sure its nothing thats a compatability thing and Norton hasnt been on the machine since ..........well the year dot.

I've done the adware/malware scan and cleaned off a load of traker cookies but thats all that found.

The thing is it WAS working fine and has been working fine on this 98 machine for years, its just died recently  :'(

I'm getting a tadge concerned now as its not been running for about 48hrs now and I really dont like having an un-protected machine, having said that I dont tend to get a lot of virus issues.

Dunno what next to try  :-\

Sometimes, Norton resurrects... :'(
You can run its uninstall tool at any time, but I think they're not for Windows 98 but just Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista.

No problemo , they do a 98 version of the tool as well  8)

Just run it and STILL cannot start any of the on access scanners up  :'( still screams at me that the requested resident task was not found  :'(

Heres the screen shot if that helps ??

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

No I dont but it was the one I clicked on to take the snap shot, non of the ressie protections would work.

Right well its back working again  :o most odd as I tried a repair and that made no difference, so I un-installed, rebooted, and re-installed AGAIN ( I had alread done this mind you ) BUT on this occasion before doing the fresh install I deleted the whole Alwil directory as a un-install dosnt remove that directory, and rebooted again before carrying out yet another fresh install.

This time it works and all the ressie scanners I need are running  8)

Very odd , dunno if deleteing the directory made the differnce or not ??

We shall see if it stays running.

Thanks for the help folks

Cheers  ;)

Yes puters can be the most anouying things.

I'm still not convinced its right mind you as I've since had a couple of IE lockups and have to blue screen it and restart  :( summits not right. But While its keeping going I'll let it be.

Short of an 'in-place install' of 98SE you could try 'System File Checker' (sfc.exe), but it probably won't help.
I've used the free version of Shane Brooks' "98lite" http://www.litepc.com/preview.html - "SLEEK" mode -  to "stabilize" (and improve the performance of older) PCs running 98SE.
My advice is to just not use IE at all!
Firefox 1.5 is stable. K-Meleon 0.9 is a faster/lighter Gecko-engine browser. http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=14285  I haven't tried the latest version  myself yet.

Why would the user use such an old version? Isn't the new versions 2 (today 3 is on beta) stable and have a lot of vulnerabilities solved?

It may be a case of support for old OS, but Firefox version 2.0 should work with win98 and above, I don't know about Firefox version 3.0 as and when that gets released (not beta).

Deleting the directory before re-installing is similar to using the avast uninstall utility. Though the utility will remove more than just the folders..

the utility can be found on the downloads page.

Only because loading speed being the only reason I would ever choose to use IE ahead of another browser on a 98SE PC, FF 1.5 is faster-loading than 2.0 (especially on old hardware) while still being an improvement over IE 5.5 or 6 in terms of vulnerabilities.

I've used K-Meleon on-and-off since the first Beta and just installed latest release 1.1.3 on a 98SE machine. So far so good (it's been minutes ;D). Note: The handy 'Privacy Bar' toolbar is not in view by default.
