Avast Wi-Fi Inspector not working
« on: May 15, 2022, 03:40:35 AM »
Hi everyone,

I have a question: I'm trying to use the "Wi-Fi Inspector" that comes with Avast Free Antivirus, but it doesn't work properly. It gets stuck at 89% or 92%, and it is unable to identify all the devices that are connected to my router. What should I do?

Repair Avast:
1. Avast GUI -> Settings -> Troubleshooting
2. Click on 'REPAIR APP'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

Hi,

I followed these steps, but the problem is still here. I even uninstalled and reinstalled Avast Free Antivirus, and the Wi-Fi Inspector still gets stuck at 89% every single time. When I click on "stop scan", Avast shows the results, and it says that no problem was found and also shows all my connected devices, so I think this might be an issue with the UI of the antivirus or something like that.

I also called a friend of mine and asked her to run the Avast Wi-Fi Inspector at her house (using her computer), and it also got stuck at 89%. She told me that she didn't know about this issue because she mostly uses Avast for virus detection while surfing the Internet.

When I run the Avast Wi-Fi Inspector on my Android smartphone, it runs without problems...This issue seems to be only affecting Avast Free Antivirus for Windows.

1. Enable debug logging (Menu > Settings > General > Troubleshooting > Enable debug logging) and reproduce the issue.
2. Follow instructions: https://support.avast.com/article/33/ and post the File-ID or name of the Support-File here afterwards.

I decided to come back and add that I just used the "Public" option on the Avast Wi-Fi/Network Inspector, and Avast completes the analysis of my network without problems. I think the information provided on the Avast website and on the Microsoft website was confusing to me:

The Avast website says regarding the Network Inspector:
"Network Inspector scans for different issues and offers different solutions depending on the network type, so it is important to select the correct option:
* Home: Scan a private network that you own (such as your home network).
* Public: Scan a network that you do not own. This may be a public Wi-Fi network, or a work or school network that is managed by a separate network administrator."

On the other hand, the Microsoft website says:
"When you first connect to a Wi-Fi network in Windows 11, it’s set as public by default. This is the recommended setting. However, you can set it as public or private depending on the network and what you want to do:
* Public network (Recommended). Use this for networks you connect to at home, work, or in a public place. You should use this in most cases. Your PC will be hidden from other devices on the network. Therefore, you can’t use your PC for file and printer sharing.
* Private network. Your PC is discoverable to other devices on the network, and you can use your PC for file and printer sharing. You should know and trust the people and devices on the network."

Avast sees my Internet connection as "Public", therefore when I use the "Public" option on Avast Wi-Fi inspector, the analysis of my network is done without problems. That was all!
